Dear colleagues,
I’m writing to advise you of a serious cyber security attack. Please be aware that we have received reports of an email making fictitious allegations towards a student that was sent to members of the Faculty of Medicine community. This is a form of phishing, which appears to come from someone you trust to attempt to obtain personal information.
If you receive this fraudulent email, do not be alarmed and follow these steps:
- DO NOT open the email or click on any links
- Forward the original email as an attachment to security@ubc.ca
- If you have entered any information, change your password immediately, and watch for suspicious activity on that account
- Delete the email
- And, DO NOT follow the instructions in the email; if you have already responded to the criminal in some way, please let security@ubc.ca know that as well
I am asking you all to remain vigilant and engage in cyber defense best practices. You can do this by completing or re-familiarizing yourself with UBC’s Privacy & Information Security Fundamentals Training - Part 1 and Part 2: hxxps://privacymatters.ubc.ca/fundamentals-training
Both modules are available on the Privacy Matters website to complete. This training is a mandatory requirement for all faculty and staff. For more information about privacy and information security training, including FAQs, please visit the UBC Privacy Matters website (hxxps://privacymatters.ubc.ca/).
NOTE: Copy the above urls to your browser and replace the ‘xx’ with tt
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Sincerely,
Gráinne McElroy
